Gateshead Clubs
Clubs have been around, let's say, from the 1700's and reading and community facilities for the working classes were the Mechanics Institutes which were not primarily for alcohol consumption.
This is about those that started in the late 1800's following the establishment of the C.I.U. (The Working Men's Club and Institute Union) in 1862. The Fed (Northern Clubs Federation ) started brewing beer in 1921.
If you're interested in clubs this book by Peter Annable, priced £4.99, is highly recommended. Peter researched and wrote this book to raise funds to save the Bombers' Club from closure. It didn't prevent closure but, having done the research, Peter published the book anyway and is devoting any money earned to the SSAFA, the only forces club still in existence.
Peter deals with all clubs. This website only deals with clubs which have a bar
The hey days of the clubs were the late Forties to, say, the Seventies, when lads had to be out the house on a Saturday by about 6.00 pm to capture a bunch of seats for them and the lasses who turned up a bit later. Clubs then were for, drinking, of course , but entertainment was very high on the agenda. It was the time when you were either in a local group or a follower of a local group.
Just like pubs, there has been a massive decline in the number of clubs still existing caused by centrally heated homes, cheap booze sold by supermarkets and the smoking ban in public places
