Great site!

Shame you missed a bevvy at the Claxton on Sunderland Road, Gateshead, which was demolished during the 60s. It was packed with local characters and I remember visits with my mother to the hatch between the bar and snug, where you could hand in a bottle to be topped up with your favourite tipple to go.

Does anyone have recollections or photos of this pub?

Great to see owld pictures of Gateshead.I think you've made a slight error with the picture of the Ellison Arms.Picture shows some other pub in the Chandless area whereas the Ellison was opposite to where the Jobcentre now stands.

Hello

A very interesting site which brings back lots of memories. I have lived in Hampshire for 32 years but was born and brought up in the Gateshead area. I did not see the Cross Keys, Dunston, mentioned - did I miss it? Also the Crowley, Swalwell is'nt the Crowley I knew. It was situated just opposite the cemetary on the Swalwell to Dunston Road and was run by Mrs Watson in the old days. I do'nt know what it is now called. Maybe thats how I missed it. My son owns a pub, The White Lion, Soberton, Hants which you can check out on the website.

Super photos

Excellent website and brilliant photographs.
I've recently started a pub/beer blog, as a sister site to my football groundhopping site.
I've added 'Gateshead Pubs' to my links list.
Cheers!

I was born in the air raid shelter in the corner of our backyard at 27 Ross Terrace Bensham at 5.20 am on Tuesday 16th July 1940 during an air raid. Whent to old Press Street School were i was known as `Badger` Burgess. At 17 years of age i would go over to the old Empire Theatre in Newcastle on a Saturday night with my school days mate Nicky Gill, who has since sadly passed away, we used to go up into the `Gods` and have a few bottles of Double Diamond. On my 21st birthday my old Mother arranged a surprise family 21st bash upstairs in the Honeysuckle on Coatsworth Road, my mates there were Bob Roberts, Bill Guthrie, Bill Brown, Don Case, Eddie Boatman, Ken Wildish, John Hogg, Jack Scott, Kieth Frazier, Danny Walker & Phil Clearie, we finished the party at our old house all crashed out on the floor, and on Sunday 17th we all went along to the Wickham House on Rawling Road, where the managers were Peggy & Albert Jackson, they lined up 21 bottles of Newcastle Broon as a 21st birthday prezzy i vaguely seem to remember i managed about 15 bottles before my mind blanked. I used the Gardners Arms only a few times as the `Wicked Hoose` was my real local, the manager of `Joicey`s` was then Joe King who was a stickler of a manager but a nice guy, `Joicey`s had a main Men only public bar, a `Mixed` lounge through the back where the lasses could use only if they were with a bloke, and the only room that ladies were served on their own was a small `Jug` where the `Older Female Population` could knock their Gin back, one of the `Jug` regulars was the wonderful old Ada Walker.
The Crown on the corner of the Coatsworth Road had a manager called `Vivian` who used to be part of a locally famous `Gay` show group called The Samba Six, previous to the Crown `Vivian` used to manage the Golden Tiger in the Newcastle Bigg Market with his show group mate `Luciel`, from the Crown Vivian reverted back to his real name George and went on to manage the Azure Blue, where he was tragically murdered.
The Magpie on Askew Road i only went in once, that was with my future wife Margaret Catchpole and her mother Nora and Dad Dick, i put my name on number 16 on a `Dominoe` card and won 12 shillings, being a stranger to the `Maggie` the locals were not too chuffed, i then took number 18 and won another 12 bob, a deathly silence came over the pub and my future Ma in Law whispered that we better go, but hey!! i was a Bensham lad and did the Teams bother me? so i was offered a third `Dominoe` card as the odds on winning three times in the `Maggie` was like winning todays national lottery, i took number 22 and you`ve guessed it, another 12 bob, so as i took the cash in an `Ice Age` atmosphere i remembered Dunkirk and evacuated the potential battle front quicker than Bobby Mitchell running down the Toons left wing.
Each of those Gateshead pubs in your Web lists had their very own exclusive story to tell, so i thank you most sincerely for the memories that you have brought back to me, Margaret and i left Gateshead in 1969 and now live in Aberdeen with our 5 now well grown up sons, but on the rare times we return to Gateshead we walk along Elysium Lane past where the Bensham Station used to be, and stand at the Dead Mans Arch and look all around us and remember what it was like in the 40s-50s and 60s, all the ghost memories come flooding back, and i shed a tear.
Thank you so very much, if anyone of my old mates read this tell them to get in touch?

Your site is very interesting. I was trying to find some information about the Lime Kiln Inn on South Shore, Gateshead which apparently used to be owned by my mother's family called "Matfin". The National Archives hold a document showing it was acquired as part of the East Gateshead clearance scheme in about 1940/41 and the licence was transferred to James Calder & Co. (Brewers) Ltd.

Do you know anything else about it?

I have enjoyed viewing your site very much, I live in Birmingham and don't really know the Gateshead area. My wifes grandmother was born in Bill Quay in 1912 and there are family connections to 'The Cricketers' pub. Family members also working in the Bill Quay shipyards a century ago. Your site helped me get a flavour of how they must have enjoyed there leisure time in the many pubs of the area. Thank you.

Great site, came across it while looking for a photograph of my old school Elgin. No luck so far any suggestions? Do you remember the place on the High Street that sold sarsaparilla? I know it wasn't a pub but I have such a bad memory, I can't recall at all what the place was, a cafe, chemist? Thanks for the memories brought back to life by your photos. Steve

Hi, nice to see your site, I was born in Bensham, on the same street as the Whickham house, My first pint was in the 5 wands, and I used to drink in the old "Joicies" now the Bensham Jockey. My cousin John Curly (related to the boxer who gave his name to Curlies) used to run the Gateshead Arms on the fell and other pubs in
Gateshead. When a friend of mine left the RAF in 1987, I was off work with a broken arm, we spent most of the time in the Olive Grove at the top of the High Street. Happy Days. Loved your site. Thanks

Hi,
You look like a family who knows their pubs ,-) so I wonder if you can help me, or even point me in the right direction?
I am looking for the pub in Gateshead owned or run by my great, great grand dad. Hs name was Michael Rutherford Collinson and I believe his son Joseph used to be a publican as well. In the 1851Census he lived at 136 St Mary Street, so I wonder if there is still a pub there?
You probably think I'm mad but if you've got the time to reply I would appreciate it.

I was really interested in the history of Gateshead pubs but note that the Moulders Arms in Low Fell (the premises is now occupied by Rumours hairdressers) was not mentioned. In 1861 my great great grandmother Mary Parkinson was the publican there. Just thought that might interest you!

Ignore previous query as I was sending it the photo finally appeared. I've lived in NZ since 1974 but used to visit relatives in Gateshead with my Dad when I was very young (in the '50s). Found out my other great-grandfather (Lyon) was a 'Brewer's Drayman' in Gateshead so quite a family connection to the 'industry' at that time. I'm so pleased I found this site. Thank you. My husband and I are delving into family trees at present. Part of both our families originated in the Gateshead and Jarrow areas. My great-grandfather, Thomas Dobson is listed in the 1881 census as Innkeeper and Horse Slaughterer (interesting combination). His residence is shown as 'the New Gateshead Inn'. My husband suggested I 'Google' it and I found your site which has some great photos. I see there is a place for a photo of the New Gateshead Inn but it didn't show - any reason for this?

Was trawling through internet looking for information on Dunston (my home town) and came across this site, which I found interesting.
I just admire what you had to go through, all that drinking, in order to build his site and bring a little bit of nostalgia into being.

Hi,was born in Winlaton ,so know most of the pubs there, left before I was old enough to drink in them but have been back and in most since, only a few times though. The commercial was my dads favorite,in fact was hard to get him out.
My Gran was a Barmaid for some time before 1973 when she died.
I think pubs near to Fenham which was where she lived.
Possibly in others,Elswick an area she lived in too.
Her name was Edith McDonald and she was a Widow.
A lovley larger lady whom I know so little about as she died when I was only a teenager.I have a few good memories but thats all.
If anyone remembers her at all please get in contact.
She must have served many drinks to loads geordies out there.
Great site by the way.Especially the remember when photos.

Hello Rob

Thought I would drop you a line and compliment you on your web site and all the work you have done, your a credit to Gateshead, I thought it was amazing, it brought back many memories, I was born in Wrekenton and my mothers side of the family had lived in Wrekenton behind the Springwell Inn pub since the 1800's, I use to collect the metal bottle tops from the pub's rubbish tip when I was a kid in the 50's and make them in to badges by prising the cork liner out and placing the bottle top on my pullover and pushing the cork liner on the the inside of the pullover and then back into the top to hold it into place.

In the early 60's my family moved to the Leam lane Estate while it was being built, we live very close to the Eagle as it was being built, I remember the Bugle also and a few more, I had cousins who ran the Wrekendyke, Springwell pub at one time,
By 1963 I was 12 years old my parents moved us all down here to Nottingham, mum dad and 6 kids, so never had a pint in the pubs, but had a few beers in some around Gateshead when when we went back to visit relations 8 years later and realised that your never far away from a pub in Gateshead and some good beer and friendly people, most of my relations in Gateshead have now past away over the years as well as mum and dad, but my happy memories of Gateshead have not, thanks again for doing a great web site Rob

All the best

Great photo's. Great memories. Good site. I went to school in Newcastle, got drunk at the age of 13 for the very first time in The Beacon, Beacon Lough. Just another thought - what about the Cross Keys and the Collingwood in Dunston?

Exceptional site for us ex-pats!
I have lived in the US since 1969 but am still a Geordie - I was born, and lived within 500 yards of the Dun Cow, Dunston and in the 60's, drank in a lot of the pubs pictured. This is a great job and I will visit your site frequently.
