The only other pub on Sunderland Road was the Shipcote Hotel. It was on the corner of Sunderland Road and Sunderland Street and faced the Elders Walker building and therefore it was on the opposite side of Sunderland Road to the Claxton

Could "Nelson" have been the nickname of something? I know the Queens on St. James Road was always known as the Bridge and some others were always known by the name of a former landlord

I remember that at one time, the Claxton was known as the Tappers Arms because some of the locals were apt to "tap" you for the price of half a Scotch

Go to www.isee.gateshead.gov.uk There is a photograph on there. Just search for Claxton

Incidentally, the Nelson was just off West Street, near the Town Hall

Suggest it was The Claxton at the corner of Sunderland Road and COOPER STREET, two streets away from Beech Street and three away from John Street. It was the only pub on that side of Sunderland Road between Gateshead High Street and the Pear Tree

Probably a long shot but does anyone know the name of a long since demolished pub that was just off Sunderland road and at the top of Beech street or John Street (I think)?

Lovely to see some good old pubs. I still visit the crown on Coatsworth Road about once a month. My grandad had The Black Horse, Barlow and the Cromwell
Well done for creating lots of memorabilia

Hi, Enjoyed looking at the photos. Do you know if the Causeway Hotel at Sherriff Hill was once called the Shepherd and Sheperdess. My great grandfather was the publican there in 1901 - he was called Gowen Elliott (I am trying to find out more information about him).

The Royal Hotel was indeed on Prince Consort Road and if my memory serves it was on the corner of Chichester Street. It was demolished along with several streets in that area in the early 70s. There is a picture of it on the Gateshead Library site here:

http://isee.gateshead.gov.uk/detail.php?t=objects&type=all&f=&s=royal&record=23

I never heard it called Swinburnes but that was the name of the brewery that built it so it is possible. I had a few drinks in there and it was a grand old place.

I had no idea how many pubs had been closed and had been demolished, is this down to the smoking ban perhaps? Is it just a coincidence that The Black Horse, Low Fell is the only pub to score 10?

Hugh, the Porcupine Park has reverted to its original name of the Gold Medal and has recently been taken over by the Hungry Horse chain. The Sterling House is still there despite undergoing a name change for a short time. Was the Broken Doll not in Newcastle?

Update: The last few times I have passed the Old Brown Jug on Carr Hill Road it has been boarded up could it finally have bitten the dust? I am amazed it has lasted so long.

Upon reviewing your site - Gateshead Pubs, which I found very interesting - I wish to congratulate you on your marvelous achievement. One inaccuracy I did spot was White Swan, Greenside reviewed 25/09/04. You list it as 'No longer a pub'. It is still trading although to my knowledge looking for a new landlord. There was a pub about 400 yards West of White Swan, called Rose & Crown which closed & was converted into residential approx. 9 years ago. I wonder if you plan to carry out a review at any time as I know most of the Ryton, Crawcrook & Greenside Pubs have had changes in Land-persons since this took place. Keep up the hard (or should that be enjoyable)work.

You may wish to revisit the White Swan in Greenside, still a pub, although between owners at present. The Rose and Crown is no longer a pub (is now a house) but that is still the stop you ask for on the no.10 bus! All the best!

Nice clean pub, loads of newcastle memrobalia.Customers really freindly, but have alot of issues with the management there! After a couple of visits could clearly see why!!They cant seem to talk and give respect to their customers without barring them! Not to mention the lovely staff who are talked down to by them!Real shame about the management, but unfortunately people will return because of the cheap prices, not me!!

Low and behold I find a picture of the Black Horse taken from my front garden. 199 Kells Lane and guess who took it - my next door neighbour Rob and if it is not him it is a very good likeness. Dear Norman, I have the full picture of the Ellison Arms taken in 1958 with the street nameplate on the corner of the pub saying Trinity Street, which was opposite Peareth Street, crossing Park Lane. I used to play around Shephards and Ellison Street in the late 50s onwards. Any other Ellison Arms must of been a very long time ago, but the picture shown is on Park Lane.

Just a little correction regarding the Ellison Arms in Central Gateshead. It was situated on the corner of Park Lane and Trinity Street. On the full picture you can see the road bridge going over the railway which is now duel carriageway. The picture itself was taken from the top of Peareth Court. It was not on Ellison Street.

Congratulations on an excellent site with superb photographs. I have followed your progress for some years but had, until now, not looked at the ‘Remember when’ area or your guest book. I have remedied that situation now and the old photographs are wonderful too. I was particularly moved by the picture of The Castle on Bensham Road as the shop on the corner was my Uncle Jimmy’s barber shop “J.Grey”. When the block was demolished he moved to premises on Coatsworth Road. I have worked my way through your guest book too, all 243 entries and it is fascinating. I found one entry from a distant cousin of mine who lives in a remote part of New Zealand. Some of the entries jogged my memory of places I had long forgotten such as Dan Cane’s and the Hen and Chicks.
I have just driven past the Five Wand, or Ye Olde Five Wande Mille Inn, as I seem to remember it from my childhood days and I am sad to report it is no more. All that remains is a pile of rubble and the demolition men are busy clearing the site.

Really enjoyed touring the pubs. It really brought back some memmories.
I was born in 1952, and was brought up in Hampden Street, Bensham, where you mentioned "The Prince of Wales", nick-named "The Hen & Chicks" (when my mother was a child in the 1920s, hens and chickens roamed around ouside the pub),later it was taken over by the paratroopers and called "The Drop In". Nearby "The Victoria" on the corner of Coatsworth Rd and Romulus Street was nick-named "Dan Canes", Danny's for short.
What does puzzle me is "The Northumberland Arms", which I doubt was on Coatsworth Road, as no corner of Coatsworth Road has a bevelled corner. Gateshead library's archives show two identical photos, the other saying "The Northumberland Arms" Alexandra Road. This is more likely.
Once again thanks for the tour.

Hi Rob.

I was brought up in Eastbourne Avenue near to Saltwell Park, and went to the Grammar School for Boys with your brother (1960-1967).

This is a great site for an expat living in Sussex to browse on a wet Sunday - lots of memories!

Most Sundays in the 1950s I would walk over Carr Hill with my dad to Felling to see my grandma. This would always be followed by me standing for half an hour (...Don't tell your mam!) outside either the Black House in Windy Nook, or the old "proper" bar in the Springfield (there was entrance off Dryden Road in those days).

When Vaux took over the "offy" up Eastbourne Avenue there was outrage amongst the local women when it was proposed to call it "The Painted Lady" - Vaux capitulated and named it after another butterfly - "The Azure Blue" - not a hooker after all!
They sold a great pint of Samson then - my dad drank Scotch (was it Lorimers?)- at one and fourpence - or 7 new pence - a pint!

In the Sixth Form we used either the Laurel bar in the Springfield, or would meet along The Fell in either The Crown or the Beaconsfield - Happy Days!!

Thanks again, Rob, for all of your efforts.

Burnsie
