The original premises called Clayton House was occupied by a semi-medical person*. Felling Gate Social Club built new premises which, when the club ceased trading, became a care home. Clayton House, with additional next door house, is now a theatre school/dance studio
*Per Gordon Stridiron
Robert Hogg Clayton, the bonesetter, did well and had a nice home on Durham Road. He worked at Wardley Colliery and had gift a of setting bones that healed correctly. He was a great Methodist and the "tin" chapel next to Wardley Colliery Co-op store was named the Robert Hogg Clayton Memorial Chapel. When at the pit he talked to one of the officials about this gift he had and he was recommended to use it. He walked out the pit and left his work tools behind. People came from the Channel Islands to be seen by him. His two sons became Doctors and both became District Medical Practitioners of Health, the one for Gateshead is buried at St. Mary's Churchyard at Heworth. For many years he annually provided a meal for a hundred or so pensioners so his heart was in the right place. I often look up and see the stone engraving of "Clayton House" opposite the chip shop when I go by on the bus.
He used press and bottles for advertising- Felling Working Mens Social Club
